It seems I've always enjoyed reading. I can remember back in junior high (you
might, too), the school would pass out these paperback "order forms/catalogs"
every so often; I'd always pick out several books to order (and the folks would
get stuck with the bill...). I've still got a good many of those things, actually.
I've continued to read off-and-on ever since. Sometimes I may not read
anything for months at the time, and then I'll go into a bookstore, look over
the shelves, and walk out with an armload - after paying for them, of course...
What I'm reading now:
Some books I've read recently:
- The Great Train Robbery (Michael Crichton) - this was a very good
story (based on a true-life story, if I'm not mistaken); one of the few MC
novels that I had not read. I'm really gonna miss future stories by him...
- Scarlett - The Sequel to Margaret Mitchell's Gone With the Wind
(Alexandra Ripley) - a re-read from a good while back. Damn, this is a good
story!
- The Force Unleashed (Sean Williams) - this was awfully good (even
though it was apparently based on a video game)...
- Servant of the Bones (Anne Rice) - another re-read...
- Merrick (Anne Rice) - a nice blend between the "witches" and the
"vampires"...
- Pandora (Anne Rice) - another old re-read...
- Blood & Gold (Anne Rice) - re-read...
- Blackwood Farm (Anne Rice) - re-read...
- Prisoners of Arionn (Brian Herbert) - another old re-read...
- Conqueror's Pride (Timothy Zahn) - re-reading...
- Belinda (Anne Rice) - re-read...
- Airframe (Michael Crichton) - re-read...
- The Appeal (John Grisham) - re-read...
- The Last Juror (John Grisham) - re-read...
- Christ the Lord - The Road to Cana (Anne Rice) - this was very
good! I find myself waiting on the next one in the series...
- To Kill A Mockingbird (Harper Lee) - Though I don't think I ever
had read this before, it did seem kinda familiar. It was a very good story...
- Empire (Orson Scott Card) - yep, another re-read...
- Wheel of the Winds (M J Enjh) - another one from the pile...
- Jungle Tales of Tarzan (Edgar Rice Burroughs) - yet another old
re-read...
- Tarzan and the Jewels of Opar (Edgar Rice Burroughs) - another old
re-read...
- Patterns of Force (Michael Reaves) - a new (well, in paperback)
Star Wars novel...
- The Son of Tarzan (Edgar Rice Burroughs) - another old re-read...
- The Final Warning - A Maximum Ride Novel (James Patterson) -
- The Beasts of Tarzan (Edgar Rice Burroughs) - another old
re-read...
- The Return of Tarzan (Edgar Rice Burroughs) - an old re-read from
the collection...
- The Terminal Man (Michael Crichton) - another old re-read...
- The Last Juror (John Grisham) - y'know, it might just be me, but
it seems to me that the last couple of books by John Grisham have been more
"human" somehow; they've always been really good to me, but it seems like
lately they characters have a lot more depth, you feel them a lot more...
- Invincible (Troy Denning) - the last in the Star Wars "Legacy of
the Force" series...
- Eragon (Christopher Paolini) -
- Airframe (Michael Crichton) - this was one of the few books by
Michael Crichton that I had not read. I guess after his recent passing, the
publisher released it again in paperback; it was really good. I'm gonna miss
reading this guy's writing...
- Death Star (Michael Reaves and Steve Perry) - another Star Wars
novel. This was awfully good; a story of the creation of the Death Star as
seen from the viewpoint of several characters...
- The Appeal (John Grisham) - this was good; it had sort of a
different ending than the usual John Grisham novel...
- Taltos (Anne Rice) - yep, another re-read; the sequel to
"Lasher"...
- Lasher (Anne Rice) - re-read; the sequel to "The Witching Hour"...
- The Witching Hour (Anne Rice) - re-read...
- Wuthering Heights (Emily Bronte) - I've read this a couple of
times over the years. It's still amazing to me to realize that this story was
written in the mid-1800s...
-
Rebel - The Life and Legend of James Dean (Donald Spoto) -
I tend to be fascinated by certain celebrities from the past (James Dean,
Marilyn Monroe, Howard Hughes and a few others). This seemed to be a pretty
good account of the life of James Dean. I got the idea he must have been
a tortured soul...
- Darth Bane - Rule of Two (Drew Karpyshyn) - another one from the
"Star Wars Universe" - tries to explain the history of the "one master - one
apprentice"...
- The King of Torts (John Grisham) - re-read...
- The Partner (John Grisham) - re-read...
- Fleet of Worlds (Larry Niven & Edward M Lerner) -
- The DaVinci Code (Dan Brown) - re-read...
- Angels & Demons (Dan Brown) - another re-read...
- Street of Shadows (Michael Reaves) - another Star Wars book...
- The Street Lawyer (John Grisham) - another re-read...
See some of the older books I've read...
Some of my all-time favorite books:
- The Star Wars series - I don't know how many folks are
aware of this, but there is actually a near-library of Star Wars novels (I
know I've got 30+ of 'em). They're pretty cool; they follow the lives of the
original characters before, during, and after the original Star Wars story...
- The Witching Hour series (Anne Rice) - these may not be to everyone's taste,
but I really enjoyed these; Anne Rice (one of my favorite - if not the
favorite - authors) is an incredibly gifted writer. Her writing makes me feel
like I'm there in the story. It just flows (when I read a lot of stuff, I find
that I have to back-up and re-read to understand what's going on - I never
have to re-read any of Anne Rice's stuff)...
- The Feast of All Saints (Anne Rice) - a really good story; a little
history, a little drama, a little romance...
